Where is That Money Tree?

I am in the wrong business, all together.

My brother and I had a very good meeting at the attorney’s office yesterday. Very informative. Learned a lot. We were given good information. I certainly appreciated their expertise. When we asked about the cost of new wills for both M and me and new powers of attorney for both of us, we were quoted the price of $2,500.

$2,500 – just let that sink in.

I don’t know whether that’s good or bad. Cheap or excessive. But for me, that is A LOT of money!

I am now recovering from sticker shock – and getting a second opinion.

But as we were leaving the attorney’s office yesterday, the receptionist asked, “did Sally tell you, when you spoke on the phone, that today’s visit would be $350?”

No.

No, Sally did NOT tell me that one hour of your time (actually less than an hour) in which I was given generic, boilerplate information was going to cost me $350. THAT was never mentioned.

So I did not pay $350.

But I would like to see a day in which one hour of my time was worth $350. I really would. I can’t imagine that there is EVER anything I could do in my life that would be worth THAT kind of money.

  1. I did ours on LegalZoom for under $300, which included the wills, advanced directives, and Power of Attorney papers for BOTH of us. Took them to the bank and got it all notarized for free. And attorney consultation was available if I needed it. Maybe give it a try.

  2. We just updated our Wills. I took the old one, retyped it, saved it on a thumb drive and made all the changes we wanted, printed them on watermark paper and gathered our witnesses and took them to the notary’s office. We have updated Wills. I found a significant error that the attorney had made when they were update in 2015. This made the update very urgent! You might be able to do that with POA.
